Limerick city is Ireland’s third largest city after Dublin and Cork, but ahead of Galway.

Limerick city (pronounced in English: /ˈlɪməɹɪk/, in Irish: Luimneach, /ˈl̪imʲɨnʲəx/) is a city in Ireland, capital of the county of the same name, Limerick.

Limerick refers to the area along the shores of the Shannon estuary, which was then known as Loch Luimnigh. ‘Inis Sibhtonn was the first settlement on this site, dating from the pre-Vikings period. It is mentioned in the Annals for King’s Island. The island was also known as Inis an Ghaill Duibh.

Limerick is situated to the west of Dublin, centrally located between Cork and Galway. Limerick City is situated in the west of the island of the Republic of Ireland and is bordered by the River Shannon.

Limerick is at the heart of the region known as the Midwest. County Limerick is also referred to as the ‘Shannon Region’. The Midwest region includes County Limerick, Clare, northern County Tipperary and the north-western part of County Kerry. The main towns in County Limerick are : Adare (Ath Dara), Croom (Cromadh), Foynes (Faing), Limerick (Luimneach) and Newcastle West (An Caisleán Nua Thiar). Limerick is geographically close to Tipperary, Nenagh and Ennis.

Limerick is one of the country’s main tourist destinations. Its advantageous geographical position is one of its main assets. It remains an accessible destination thanks to its extensive public transport network.

Limerick has many places of tourist interest, including King John’s Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, the Treaty Stone on which the Treaty of Limerick is reputed to have been signed, the Hunt Museum, etc. The University of Limerick is also well worth a visit, as the cultural centre of the region. Nearby, near Limerick City, you can visit Bunratty Castle, the village of Adare and the Foynes Flying Boat Museum. All great destinations for photographers.

Limerick’s city centre is divided into different districts and styles. The ‘English Town’ to the south of King’s Island, with Limerick Castle; the ‘Irish Town’, which is made up of the oldest streets on the south side; and today’s economic centre, known as ‘Newtown Pery’. Limerick’s city centre has been constantly evolving since the early 2000s.
