Photography Workshop: Unleash Your Creativity
When I moved to Ireland from France (Lyon), I found more than just a new country. I discovered an endless playground for expressing my passion for photography. The green landscapes, the changing light and the unique atmosphere of this city inspire me every day. As a professional photographer specialising in fine art and creative photography, I work with artists and individuals to create unique and memorable images.
However, my passion doesn’t stop there. I am also a photography teacher at Limerick College of Further Education (LCFE) (College of FET, Mulgrave Street Campus), where I am keen to pass on my knowledge and passion to new talent through various photography classes.
Sharing my passion through teaching
Passing on my knowledge is another important aspect of my job. I am fortunate to teach photography at Limerick College of Further Education (LCFE). My photography classes are aimed at all levels, from beginners who want to discover the basics of photography to more experienced photographers who want to deepen their knowledge.
Digital Photography: The Basics and Beyond
In my evening photography classes at LCFE, I offer a complete immersion into the world of digital photography. Whether you are a beginner or want to deepen your knowledge, you will find what you are looking for.
The fundamentals of photography, to get started:
We start by learning the basics: understanding how a digital SLR (DSLR) camera works, mastering the settings for exposure, focus and white balance.
- Light, the key to any image: Light is an essential element in photography. We study the different sources of light (natural, artificial) and their effects on the image. We see together how to manage a light scheme to master the split, Rembrandt, the loop or even more creative effects. The diagram with 3 points of light will allow us to give a more cinematic effect to the portrait later.
- The exposure triangle. At the heart of photography, we find the famous exposure triangle, composed of three linked elements:
- The aperture: It is the opening of the diaphragm that controls the amount of light entering the lens.
- The shutter speed: It determines the length of time the sensor will be exposed to light.
- The ISO sensitivity: The ISO measures the sensitivity of your sensor to light. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive your sensor will be to light, but at the risk of introducing digital noise.
Mastering camera settings
By understanding these three elements during our photography workshop on light management, you will be able to adjust your camera settings to obtain the desired exposure in all lighting conditions.
- Focus: It allows you to define the area of sharpness in your image.
- White balance: White balance allows you to correct the color temperature of the ambient light to obtain natural colors.
Mastering these concepts will allow you to get out of automatic modes: You will no longer be limited by the automatic modes of your camera and will be able to create personalized images. You will also have more freedom to Experiment and develop your creativity. Once you have acquired the basics, you can have fun exploring the different creative possibilities offered by photography.
Discover the themes in photography:
Through the photography courses, we will review different styles of photography:
- The portrait: We cover portrait techniques, from posing to lighting, including emotion management.
- The still life: The still life is an ideal exercise for working on composition, light and textures. We will also work on transparency effects and reflections.
- Studio photography: For those who want to go further, we offer studio photography courses, where you will learn to master different types of lighting and create varied atmospheres.
- And much more…
Film photography: Back to basics
In addition to the workshops on digital photography, I also give courses on film photography. It is a return to basics that I am particularly passionate about. I teach students the techniques of developing in the darkroom, a magical moment when the image gradually appears on the paper. It is a return to basics that allows you to reconnect with a slower and more meditative practice.
Bringing life to the images captured on your film
Photographic development is an art that will allow you to transform your negatives into unique prints. It is an enriching experience that will give you total control over the final rendering of your photos.
Developing your own film is an exciting adventure that requires patience and rigor. But the result, a unique and personal image, is well worth it. If you would like to know more, I can accompany you in this process and provide you with personalized advice during a workshop in a darkroom.
Developing your photos in the darkroom:
This is a magical moment when the image gradually appears before your eyes. We will explore the characteristics of the different types of black and white and color films, and their applications. You will discover the different printing techniques, from contact printing to enlargement printing.
Photograms: an artistic approach without a lens
Photograms are images obtained by placing objects directly on a sheet of light-sensitive photo paper, then exposing it to a light source. It is a photographic technique that allows you to create abstract and original images, without the use of a lens.
