Dublin, the beating heart of Ireland, is much more than just a capital city. Founded in the Middle Ages, Dublin has evolved over the centuries to become the dynamic metropolis it is today. Located on the east coast of the island and at the centre of County Dublin, it dominates the island of Ireland in terms of population, far surpassing Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland.

Dublin, Ireland’s economic powerhouse, has undergone phenomenal growth in recent decades. Its economy, which was once mainly based on industry and commerce, has diversified considerably to become a major centre for information and communication technologies. Numerous multinationals have chosen to set up their European headquarters in Dublin, attracted by its favourable tax environment and skilled workforce.

A veritable cultural melting pot, Dublin has been the birthplace of many writers, musicians and artists who have left their mark on the world’s literary and musical history. Dublin’s rich historical heritage, palpable in its cobbled streets and ancient buildings, sits alongside a vibrant contemporary arts scene. Dublin is also renowned for its lively nightlife, its many traditional pubs and its warm welcome.

Dublin, a true port city, has always been closely linked to the sea. Dublin Bay, which opens out onto the Irish Sea, has played an essential role in the city’s development. Dublin, a veritable jewel on Ireland’s east coast, owes much of its charm to the River Liffey, which flows right through it. This river, which rises in the Wicklow mountains, has shaped the city’s history and landscape. It divides Dublin in two and serves as the backbone of the city, linking the historic heart with the modern districts. The quays of the River Liffey are a popular place for Dubliners to stroll and offer magnificent views of the city.

Although County Dublin has been administratively divided into several smaller counties (Dublin, Fingal and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown), it remains a strong cultural and historical entity. It is home to a multitude of towns and villages, each with its own character.

• Dun Laoghaire: Located south of Dublin, Dun Laoghaire is a popular seaside town for Dubliners. It is known for its picturesque harbour, beaches and quieter atmosphere than Dublin.
• Swords: Located to the north of Dublin, Swords is a fast-growing town that has retained its medieval charm. It boasts a Norman abbey and a castle.
• Malahide: This coastal village is famous for its 12th-century castle and magnificent gardens. It’s also a great place for seafood lovers.
• Howth: Situated on a peninsula north of Dublin, Howth is a picturesque fishing village. It has a bustling harbour, spectacular cliffs and plenty of walking opportunities.
